pollution alert

Sore throat, itchy eyes, breathing difficulties...
And what if your skin were subject to the same irritation?

Pollution: the enemy of oily acne-prone skin types

After more than 15 years of research and numerous avant-garde studies, La Roche-Posay has identified atmospheric pollution as a factor that exacerbates inflammatory skin conditions such as acne-prone skin. An increasing number of adults suffer from late onset acne to acne-prone skin, a condition that tends to be exacerbated by pollution peaks.

Pollution, oxidation of the sebum and worsening of symptoms related to acne

The oxidation of the sebum caused by atmospheric pollution intensifies acne signs. Atmospheric pollution, combined with dust and UV rays, results in the oxidation of squalene, the main component of sebum.

Ozone and fine particles, more specifically microscopic PM2.5, peroxidise the sebum. These pollutants change the composition of the sebum and at the same time cause a deficiency in vitamins C and E, two natural antioxidants present in the epidermis.

The oxidation of the squalene is equivalent to an attack on the cutaneous barrier. The result: the skin becomes shiny due to the excess sebum, the pores become blocked, blackheads reappear, skin texture can become uneven and the complexion duller.

What routine should be adopted to fight against the cutaneous effects of pollution?

Atmospheric pollution exacerbates inflammatory skin conditions. When they stick to the skin and become lodged in the pores, pollutants alter the cutaneous barrier. In order to preserve the skin, it is important to combine a good routine with suitable products to prevent polluting particles from exacerbating acne.

Two simple steps followed on a daily basis can protect oily acne-prone skin types from the cutaneous effects of pollution:

  • 1 Morning and evening, the skin must be gently cleansed to get rid of pollutants without causing further irritation.   combines effective cleansing and the gentleness of micellar water. Specially formulated for oily skin types, it removes impurities, including those caused by pollution, without warming up the skin, and eliminates excess sebum. To finish of the cleansing stage, use  that purifies the skin while removing impurities and excess sebum.
  • 2To prevent oxidation of sebum due to pollution, La Roche-Posay has developed the Effaclar K+ formula. With its anti-oxidising action, as early as the first application,  Effaclar K(+) prevents sebum oxidation and gives the skin a matte finish for 8 hours. The result: the skin is rejuvenated, smoothed and freed from recurring blackheads.
